The video game industry is always in a state of uncertainty as any major publisher/game developer can get bought out and become a subsidiary of another large corporation. This is the case, recently, with From Software, developers of Dark Souls and Armored Core.
From Software has recently been acquired by Kadokawa Corporation of Japan. Kadokawa might sound familiar to those who follow Japanese Manga as they are the publishers of the famous Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam series. The details of the transfer in ownership conclude to be an 80% shift of From Software’s shares from former shareholder Transcosmos by May 21st.
A Brief Overview
To state a little bit of history about Kadokawa Corporation, they are best known for creating and distributing mangas, however, recently Kadokawa created a subdivision called Kadokawa Games and it is quickly becoming a growing force in the video games industry. With the acquisition of titles such as Dark Souls and Armored Core, Kadokawa Games becomes that much more relevant as these are established and popular titles. Kadokawa Games has published Suda51 titles such as Killer is Dead and Lollipop Chainsaw in Japan while also helping develop RPG’s such as Demon Gaze.
Kadokawa Corporation has come out stating that with this acquisition,
“We are planning to expand our position in this business with both Kadokawa Games and From Software. We have planned a series of discussions aimed at cooperation: expanding and developing both companies while taking advantage of their areas of expertise” (CVG quote taken from Joystiq).
From the quote above, it seems as though Kadokawa has plans for the near future to further expand their games subsidiary as well as cultivating the extended growth of From Software and, subsequently, their popular titles. By obtaining both the internal resources such as talent and expertise as well as a figurehead and well-established title such as Dark Souls, Kadokawa Games looks to bolster development in all aspects.
A Final Word
Dark Souls found much success as news directly one year ago stated that sales of the title neared around the 2.3 million range. With the recent release of Dark Souls 2 and the acquisition in mind, Kadokawa Games must have big plans in mind to top such a sales number for the popular sequel. It will be interesting to see how such an acquisition pans out and what it entails for the near future.
